Next-generation space talent in action: Orli completes her Skills for Space internship

Craft Prospect is delighted to congratulate Orli Meiksin on completing her internship with our Systems Integration Cell as part of the UK Space Agency’s Skills for Space programme, a UK-wide initiative designed to give students hands-on experience and industry exposure through structured internships with organisations across the space sector.

During her time at Craft Prospect, Orli worked as a Hardware Intern, developing a piece of test equipment to improve in-house PCB testing and debugging capability.

Her project focused on the creation of a rapid passive resistance checker for carrying out continuity tests. For complex in-house boards, such as data router boards with more than 300 connections, being able to quickly check whether each connection passes or fails can save a significant amount of time during testing.

Rather than requiring engineers to read and record exact resistance values, Orli’s system uses a known continuity threshold to provide a clear pass/fail indication. It was also designed to use low current and voltage during testing, helping ensure that sensitive boards are not damaged.

The project gave Orli experience across several stages of the engineering process, including simulation, PCB design, board assembly, housing design, 3D printing, and testing. It also supported the competency-based approach of the Skills for Space programme, giving her practical experience across technical design, manufacturing, testing, and wider engineering workflows.

In addition to the test equipment itself, Orli also helped the Systems Integration team explore new workflows using GitHub and KiCad. Her project was the first PCB project at Craft Prospect to be fully designed using KiCad, creating useful learning for future hardware development work.

Orli is going into her final year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow and joined Craft Prospect with an interest in developing her electronics skills while exploring a future career in space engineering.
