It was an enormous honour to welcome Ed Hoffman, former NASA Chief Knowledge Officer, to Craft Prospect last week.

We gave him a tour of our facilities, shared an overview of some of our work, and were thrilled that he took the time to give us a talk sharing some of the lessons he learned during his 30 years working across some of NASA’s most complex programmes.

Ed spoke about the importance of building ‘smart missions’: projects where success depends not only on technical excellence, but on how effectively people share knowledge, collaborate, learn, and make decisions together.

He highlighted the role of leadership in creating the right environment for teams to succeed, and shared perspectives on management styles that bring people together, the challenges of driving institutional change, and the importance of supporting engineers to make sure their ideas are heard.

These are themes that also sit at the heart of his latest book, The Smart Mission, co-written with Matthew Kohut and Laurence Prusak, which we are excited to add to the Craft Prospect library. The book challenges more traditional process-led approaches to project management and argues that human skills, knowledge, communication, and culture are fundamental to successful projects.

For a team working on complex, collaborative space missions, Ed’s talk resonated powerfully and sparked thoughtful discussion across the room.

A huge thank you to Ed for so generously taking the time to visit us, sharing his experiences and infectious positive energy, and giving the team such a vital perspective on the human side of delivering ambitious missions.
