We partnered with Simera Sense, leading provider of high-resolution Earth observation camera solutions for the global small satellite market, to complete this exciting 3-month activity funded by Glasgow City Innovation District’s Venture Studio, in partnership with Scottish Enterprise.
The HYPPO (Hyperspectral Processing Onboard) project demonstrates AI-driven cloud masking on hyperspectral Earth observation data. This allows high-value data to be prioritised for transmission and helps tackle the bottleneck created by on-board storage and downlink limitations.
Raw hyperspectral data from Simera Sense’s HyperScape100 is fed into our DPM to demonstrate onboard processing using our Astral Intelligence Toolbox. The data is first co-registered so that the hyperspectral bands are in alignment, before AI-enabled cloud masking is performed.
The mask generated onboard allows the hyperspectral data to be compressed where regions are obscured by cloud cover, optimizing the onboard storage and data downlink budgets. The volume of data captured is thus reduced without reducing the value of the data. Tagged and searchable data products are created onboard and intelligently prioritized for downlink, reducing the latency of information to the ground.
Marié Botha, Technology Development Manager at Simera Sense, said, “Collaborating on the HYPPO project with Craft Prospect has been a true testament to the power of partnerships. We're excited about the project’s results and look forward to monitoring the continued success achieved through this project."
Alisdair Gunn, Director of Glasgow City Innovation District (GCID), commented, "We're delighted that the GCID Venture Studio funding has allowed Craft Prospect to work with Simera Sense on this project. Craft Prospect exemplify the amazing work being done in Glasgow within the space sector and we hope this project will allow them to continue their work going forward."
Derek Shaw, Director of Scaling Innovation at Scottish Enterprise, said, “Innovative Scottish companies such as Craft Prospect are playing a leading role in the development of space data applications internationally, and the partnership between it and Simera Sense is an important step in highlighting how that data can be used commercially. The results of both this project and the wider funding call it was part of are encouraging, and we’re now working with GCID and industry to explore further collaborative opportunities.”
